The hypocrisy over Fiji

Here is a list of countries that New Zealand trades with. One has to ask why sanctions are not in place for these countries given their parlous state of internal affairs when we are busy bashing Fiji. There are many more but this list serves to highlight the point.

  • Pakistan – following a military takeover on 12 October 1999, Chief of Army Staff and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee, General Pervez MUSHARRAF, suspended Pakistan’s Constitution and assumed the additional title of Chief Executive; on 12 May 2000, Pakistan’s Supreme Court unanimously validated the October 1999 coup and granted MUSHARRAF executive and legislative authority for three years from the coup date; on 20 June 2001, MUSHARRAF named himself as president and was sworn in, replacing Mohammad Rafiq TARAR.Musharraf was feted by Prime Minster Helen Clark in a State Dinner when he visited New Zealand in 2005.
  • China, People’s Replublic of – Communist State, Tianamen Square, enough said.
  • Thailand – after coup in September 2006, junta appointed an interim National Assembly with 250 members to act as Senate and House of Representatives; body has no vote on government matters. Also party to NZ-Thailand Closer Economic Partnership agreement which is yet to be suspended following the coup in Thailand.
  • Indonesia – East Timor, Current issues include: alleviating poverty, preventing terrorism, consolidating democracy after four decades of authoritarianism, implementing financial sector reforms, stemming corruption, and holding the military and police accountable for human rights violations.
  • Saudi Arabia – Monarchy, suffrage only for males over 21, but no political parties and only Royal family can be ministers.
  • United Arab Emirates – suffrage is none, power controlled by Emirs
  • Viet Nam – Communist state

I welcome some consistency in the treatment of Fiji, perhaps we could now institute a Closer Economic Partnership viz a viz Thailand.
