1999 retrospective

PM’s dinner date sours – 19 Feb 1999 – NZ Herald: New Zealand National news

Where are the players in this little article now. Well one has long since retired but Phil Goff, the Labour leader in waiting said this;

“Nothing could be more political than a discussion between the Government’s major advertising agency [head] and a Prime Minister as to how he was going to help her get re-elected.

“As the cabinet manual says, the appearance of conflict of interest can be as important as the reality. There is a clear appearance here that the Government’s major advertising agency, which has literally millions of dollars pumped into it, is providing as a quid pro quo free support for the National Party campaign.”

Yes indeed Mr Goff, let’s re-write that….

“Nothing could be more political than a discussion between the Governing Party’s major “big money” donor and transport mogul and a Prime Minister as to how they were going to raise a loan to pay for their re-election in 2008.

“As the cabinet manual says, the appearance of conflict of interest can be as important as the reality. There is a clear appearance here that the Government’s major “big money” donor, who has literally millions of dollars available to him, is providing as a quid pro quo interest free loan support for the Labour Party campaign and received an offer of a Ministerial Portfolio and a New Years honour”

The rank hypocrisy is there for all to see.
