National tougher on youth crime

Nats promise strict rules for young crims – New Zealand, world, sport, business & entertainment news on Stuff.co.nz

National has released its policy on youth crime and it is quite a bit tougher than the current regime. It involves creating a judicial environment that monitors young criminals who have finished their sentence. Other intiatives involve giving the Youth Court new powers.

* The power to issue parenting orders, requiring the parents of young offenders to address problems at home that may be contributing to their child’s offending.

* The power to refer young offenders to mentoring programmes to get young people back on track.

* The power to refer young offenders to compulsory drug or alcohol rehabilitation programmes.

This is a great start but I long for a party that will introduce a “time sentenced = time served” policy. Come on National, Kiwis want it, and thy want it now.
