Star Trek – Best prequel ever

Star Trek PosterWhaleoil and SPanish Bride went to the movies last night and since we are both Trekkies we went to see Star Trek.

This movie was simply fantastic.

It explores the backstories of James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) and Spock (Zachary Quinto), before they unite aboard the USS Enterprise to combat Nero (Eric Bana), a Romulan from the future who threatens the United Federation of Planets.

It has all the classic characters, Kirk, Spock, Chekov, Sulu, Uhura, Scottie, “Bones” McCoy and also has a little of the back story of Christopher Pike the first captain of the Enterprise.

Leonard Nimoy is the only past cast member to make an appearance as he reprises Ambassador Spock. He is brilliant.

In fact all of the actors are billiant and it is clear that they have all been made to study the original series as they have all the facial expressions, verbal eccentricities and body movements down pat. It is actually uncanny to watch the show develop the characters while you recognise immediately who they all are.

Ty Burr of the Boston Globe gave it 4/4 stars, describing it as “ridiculously satisfying”, and the “best prequel ever”.

He is absolutely right. I sat there the whole film, with a ridiculoius grin all over my face.

The movie has stayed true to Gene Roddenberry’s legacy.

Go see it, it is fantastic. Now to buy it on DVD.
