When Paul Capsis first got an agent, she sat him down for a serious talk. ”She said to me, ‘Right, darling, let’s get something straight,”’ he says. ”There’s not a lot of work for you in our industry because you’re a wog. You’re obviously gay so, you know, you’re not going to play romantic leads. And you’re not tall.”’

Capsis, who was overjoyed at becoming professional with the care of a top agent, was taken aback: ”I said, ‘But don’t you think it’s going to change?’ And she said, ‘Oh, darling, if it were up to me, of course it would change. Of course it?should change. But it’s just not. It’s not what it is. So don’t expect too much.”’

Two decades later, Capsis, 47, is one of the reasons things have changed in the Australian entertainment industry. As an actor and singer, he is renowned for an extraordinary voice, raw and potent energy and versatile artistry.

Although best known as a cabaret singer, he is predominantly an actor, constructing strong characters whether singing or performing in plays.
