A judge has refused to disqualify himself from a child sex case after allegations he had said “all paedophiles… should be put on an island and starved to death“.

District Court Judge Michael Finnane this afternoon rejected the suggestion he had made the remarks to the accused man’s solicitor at a social function six months ago.

“I am being asked to disqualify myself, not because I expressed any opinion about [the accused] … but because I expressed intemperate but unquestioned views – if [the solicitor] Greg Walsh is correct – in which I said I advocated illegal exile, torture and murder of paedophiles, something that I deny doing.”
