Shearer’s emigration hypocrisy

David Shearer must be dumber than a sack of hammers. Labour has constantly bashed up the government because of the alleged brain drain to Australia but yesterday he was lobbying the UK government more relaxed visa requirements:

Labour leader David Shearer would like to see visa restrictions for skilled Kiwi workers heading to the United Kingdom relaxed.

Mr Shearer has raised the issue in a meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague in Auckland on Tuesday.

Mr Hague is in the country for two days – his second visit to New Zealand in two years.

As well as formal bilateral talks with Foreign Affairs Minister Murray McCully, Mr Hague has met with the Labour leader.

Mr Shearer said he talked to Mr Hague about the possibility of the UK relaxing some of the restrictions for skilled workers from New Zealand.?

Recent changes to the visa system have made it harder for Kiwis to live and work in the UK.

“We used to have 1500-odd people getting skilled visas going into the UK,” Mr Shearer said.

This number has dropped to about 700, whereas about 6500 people come from the UK to New Zealand each year, he said.

“It’s beneficial to both countries, the flow of people backwards and forwards is always a good thing and we both learn from the skills and experience of each others’ countries.”

So let me get this straight, the ebb and flow of people travelling to the UK is “beneficial” but between NZ and Australia it is somehow evil?

It’s a bit like their foreign ownership policy where anyone but Chinese can invest in New Zealand.

I hope he was more eloquent that this:
