New Zealander of the Year – your chance to vote

OK, first, thanks for the many of you suggesting I should be New Zealander of the Year. ?It would be cool, but I’m asking ?my own team who to pick, so I’m obviously disqualified for this particular illustrious award. ?But – thank you all the same.

Here are the people that didn’t get a clear 2nd nomination, so they can’t be voted for today

  • Lindsay Mitchell
  • Bevan Chuang
  • John Minto
  • Hone Harawira
  • Louisa Wall
  • Kim Dotcom
  • Scott Dixon
  • David Shearer
  • Val Baker and the Matata police
  • Bob Parker
  • Gerry Brownlee

One or two there reflecting some humour or the fact that we do in fact allow readers to have a different opinion to me!

Val Baker and the Matata police was an interesting nomination. ?This is how it was put forward, and I think they’ve earned some approbation: ?

You know what? I’m going to be serious about this.

I’m actually nominating a group for NZers of the year.

Val Baker and the Matata police. A group of community minded individuals down in Matata in the BOP have created a youth marine education program that involves the kids of the community.

They’ve got themselves a boat, an ATV to pull it with, and have really made a difference down there.

Years gone by as you travelled through Matata you’d see graffiti everywhere, kids were getting in trouble because they had nothing to do.

This initiative has really turned things around down there.

Graffiti is all but gone, the kids interact with the police in a positive way, AND they’re learning skills that they can take with them wherever they go.

We see Val through our shop every now and then, and he always talks about how well things are going down there, speaks with pride about how the kids are getting right into it, and how it really makes a difference.

And yes, for those who have good memories, it is the Val Baker who played in the Maori All Blacks – true gentleman and all round good bastard!

There are many Val Bakers around the country. ?They do much better work than the likes of Kim Dotcom and Len Brown, but they simply don’t get the exposure. ?Thanks to our reader, Ratchet, for highlighting this.

There were four people that received a nomination and at least one seconder. ?And now it is your turn to pick the winner.
