Face of the day

Today’s face of the day is a lame duck. I thought she was dying as she couldn’t walk and was hiding under a tree for a day and a night. I gave her food and some water to drink but I worried that I was just prolonging her suffering. There was no obvious trauma apart from the fact that she couldn’t walk and was very weak, too weak even to quack. We wondered if she had been hit by a car or bitten by a dog.

Yesterday I called the SPCA and they gave me the local Bird Lady’s number.

To my surprise she told me that she was currently caring for a number of ducks with the exact same problem. She diagnosed Botulism and said that if I put her into water and kept an eye on her she should survive. The council in our area has recently drained a pond that is usually covered in ducks. The left over stinking, stagnant water has made a lot of them sick. We found a dead one in our gutter only last week.

Her legs are partially paralysed but she is able to drink and eat so I hope she will survive. Apparently most ducks with Botulism drown, as the paralysis spreads till they cannot keep their heads up.

Cam of course has reminded me that it will soon be duck hunting season but I don’t care. He thinks he is so tough but it was him that pointed her out to me and told me that he thought she was hurt. When I showed interest in caring for her he made me promise not to bring her into the house but he has been checking up on her so I know he is just a BIG softy really.
