Ignorance of Islamic law comes at a huge cost

I have written an article before about four western women’s experiences of Islamic law.

Now the media and advocacy groups are once again expressing their SHOCK at what has happened to a British woman showing once again their deliberate refusal to acknowledge the elephant in the room which is the misogyny of Islamic law.

The family of a British woman arrested in Dubai for reporting her own rape has launched an online appeal, urging the public and the UK government to help negotiate her release.

The British woman was charged for having extramarital sex after she reported her own rape to police, according to UK-based legal advocacy group Detained in Dubai.

The case has revealed a persistent and deep-rooted prejudice against women in the Gulf state, rights groups say.

“The authorities continue to fail survivors of such violence by treating women who have been raped as criminals, instead of investigating and prosecuting suspected perpetrators,” Drewery Dyke, UAE researcher at Amnesty International said.

“Victims go to (the police) expecting justice, and end up being prosecuted. They not only invalidate their victimisation, they actually punish them for it,”

…The woman’s passport has been confiscated, Stirling said, and she may face trial where punishments can include imprisonment and flogging.

The woman’s family said she was on holiday at the time and was planning to travel to Australia when she was reportedly raped by two British men in Dubai, one of the seven emirates that make up the UAE.

Media and advocacy groups fail again and again to focus on the actual problem. The problem is not deep-rooted prejudice against women, the problem is Islamic Sharia Law. The problem is Islam and its legal and cultural treatment of women. Just as the media is loath to call an Islamic terrorist a Muslim the media and advocacy groups are equally loath to criticise Sharia law.

You could not pay me to visit a Muslim country. Any western woman who enters a Muslim country is putting herself at risk. The culture and laws are so alien to us. There are things you can be punished for that the average western woman could not even conceive. Imagine being imprisoned for posting a photo on Facebook of a car parked across two disabled spots outside your Abu Dhabi apartment. The woman who committed that crime had the following punishment.

53 hours in custody, shackled at the ankles, strip-searched, blood tested, forced to sleep on a concrete floor without a mattress or pillow with no access to toilet paper or eating utensils and a $3600 fine before being deported.

Imagine being?Alicia Gali?who committed the crime of being drugged, beaten up and gang-raped by three men. (four broken ribs.) She was sentenced to a year in jail ( 11 months for sex outside of marriage and 1 month for drinking alcohol) then deported.

Marte Deborah Dalelv?committed the crime of being raped, drinking alcohol without a licence and perjury and was jailed for 16 months and then deported.

Rebecca Blake?committed the crime of being drunk while making out with Conor McRedmond in a taxi while allegedly having sex. She was punished with?three months in a Dubai jail and a ?512 fine

These women have experienced Sharia law up close and personal. It is well past time that media were honest about Islamic law. Far too many western women are visiting or working in Islamic countries totally ignorant of the dangers and of how truly evil Sharia law is.
