Come fly with me

Fasten your seatbelts, ladies and gentlemen, you are in for a bumpy ride.

And no, you are not flying into Wellington in a southerly. You are about to read a story that will probably shock you to the core.

Do you see anything wrong with the picture above? This is a photo of air traffic controllers, although I admit, it is a stock photo, so I don’t know which airport. Shouldn’t matter though, should it?

No. Of course not.

With your knowledge of the world the way it is these days, take another look. Then tell me if you see anything wrong with the photo above. Quote:

For decades, the selection process for the Federal Aviation Administration?s air traffic controllers was rigorous. After all, one minor mistake could cost hundreds of people their lives. End quote.

Well, so it should be. The role of an air traffic cntroller is a tough one. They can be under all kinds of pressure and, depending on the airport, the pressure can last for the duration of each shift. We want the very best in that role – right? Quote:

But a new report from Fox News host Tucker Carlson revealed the Obama administration modified the FAA?s candidate selection process to value workplace diversity over competency, experience and skills.

According to Carlson, due to changes implemented during the Obama administration, air traffic controller candidates are now required to complete a ?biographical questionnaire? before even being considered for a job with the FAA.

If they don?t pass, they aren?t considered for a position ? no matter how much experience they have or how qualified they are. End quote.

Well, okay. Not sure why experience or qualifications are not more important than biology, but I’ll let it go.?Quote:

Fox News obtained a copy of the questionnaire and how it is scored. According to Carlson, candidates whose worst subject in high school was science and candidates who are unemployed receive the most points possible on the test. End quote.

Hang on. Candidates whose WORST subject in high school was science score highest? Even though controllers need knowledge of things like map co-ordinates, weather forecasts, aircraft fuel calculations, to name but a few? I suppose those things can be taught in training though.

But wait until you read this. Quote:

In contrast, licensed pilots and those with extensive air traffic control knowledge aren?t highly scored. End quote.

Why not? Quote:

Michael Pearson, an attorney representing a man suing the FAA over its diversity test, told Carlson the test is intentionally designed to ?weed out? experienced candidates, especially those with an aviation background.

Carlson noted that hiring less experienced candidates to control air traffic puts millions of lives at risk. So why would the FAA make the changes? Pearson?s answer suggests the reason is just as egregious as the changes.

?A group within the FAA, including the human resources function within the FAA, including the National Black Coalition of Federal Aviation Employees, determined that the workforce was too white. They had a concerted effort through the Department of Transportation in the Obama administration to change that,? Pearson said. End quote.

What can you say to that?

So tell me, next time you board a plane, will you feel happy that the person in charge of making sure the aircraft you are on does not crash into another one, either in mid-air or on the runway, was not the best, most experienced person for the job, but was chosen because the industry needed more black people?

Or will you, like me, feel terrified at the prospect?

This is the world we live in now.
