Free Speech: We tried to warn you

We ?free speech absolutists? have been shouting from the rooftops that the contemporary left?s mania for censorship and bullying heckler?s vetoes is going to come back to bite them on the backsides. When you spend all your time making nooses, sooner or later one of them is going to end up around your own neck.

So, pardon my schadenfreude when the lefties start finding themselves on the sharp end of the pitchforks they?ve been waving around. Caitlyn Johnstone at Anti-Media points out the bleeding obvious. Quote:

I think it?s understandable that those of us who have been warning of the dangers of internet censorship find it a bit funny to see ThinkProgress now complaining that it has been censored by Facebook?with ThinkProgress getting censored by Facebook, you really couldn?t ask for a more clear-cut case of reaping what you sow?

All the ?let me help you cheer for the establishment while pretending to oppose it? pundits who celebrated Alex Jones? coordinated de-platforming last month are falling all over themselves to spin this new development in a way that allows them to feel as though they aren?t being proven wrong day after day after day, but of course they are. Facilitating the censorship of anyone?s speech is facilitating the censorship of your own speech in the long run, and we?re not even having to wait long to see it this time around. End of quote.

Mush-brained leftist empty vessel, ThinkProgress, loudly campaigned for the likes of Alex Jones to be unpersoned by their Silicon Valley overlords. These socialist bullies have been waging economic terrorism against conservatives, banning, deplatforming, and lobbying sites to cut off funding streams to websites.

Now they?re squealing like piggies when their revenue is unceremoniously slashed, courtesy of the very censorship they?ve been clamouring for. Quote:

If Facebook continues?the consequences could be quite severe for left-leaning outlets generally?at its peak, Facebook provided as much as 40 percent of ThinkProgress? traffic.

Last year, Facebook announced that it would partner with The Weekly Standard, a conservative magazine, to ?fact check? news articles that are shared on Facebook. At the time, ThinkProgress expressed alarm at this decision. End of quote.

Of course, they did. When the left demanded the appointment of censors, of course, they meant censors who they already agreed with. But, sooner or later, a censor will be appointed who just happens to disagree with you. Quote:

The Weekly Standard has a history of placing right-wing ideology before accurate reporting. Among other things, it labeled the Iraq War ?A War to Be Proud Of? in 2005, and it ran an article in 2017 labeling climate science ?Dadaist Science,? and promoted that article with the phrase ?look under the hood on climate change ?science? and what you see isn?t pretty.? End of quote.

Whether you or I agree or not, those are all perfectly defensible opinions. But bigoted, groupthinking leftists are always shocked that anyone could hold an opinion they don?t like. Quote:

The Weekly Standard is one of only five outlets that enjoys the power to ?fact check? other people?s work on Facebook. The other four are the Associated Press and three outlets that specialize in fact-checking ?, PolitiFact, and No left-leaning outlet has this special ability to ?fact check? other writers? work. End of quote.

Those four are all left-leaning outlets. Even AP is rated as having a slight left bias. But, when you live in an echo-chamber, you think that everyone else in there with you represents the only possible reasonable opinion. Quote:

A source told the news outlet Quartz that Facebook?s partnership with The Weekly Standard was part of an effort to ?appease all sides.?

Earlier this year, Facebook also hired Republican Sen. John Kyl of Arizona to lead an ?audit? of alleged ?liberal bias at the expense of conservative voices? at the social media juggernaut. End of quote.

In other words, to their credit, Facebook have at least made a token effort to balance the roster in their unelected digital Star Chamber. Even if it?s mere lip-service, it?s surprisingly more than I expected of them. But even that is enough to send ThinkProgress into a screaming tantrum.

Well, having so relentlessly stamped on everyone else?s free speech, what right do you have to complain when you lose yours?

That?s why we who advocate free speech include even bigoted cretins like ThinkProgress. As Caitlyn Johnstone writes: Quote:

It is wrong for anyone to be deprived of political speech, even if much of their political speech consists of attempts to silence the political speech of others?Silicon Valley plutocrats?should not be determining who gets an audience in the new media environment and who doesn?t. End of quote.

As Noam Chomsky says, ?If you?re really in favour of free speech, then you?re in favour of freedom of speech for precisely the views you despise. Otherwise, you?re not in favour of free speech?.
