Simon, good morning.

Caller Simon

Good morning Leighton, good morning Simon.

Simon

Gidday, Simon.

Caller Simon

Ah? two quick questions: previously a national voter wondering where to go at next election, foreign buyers ban ? I know there?s a lot of hot money coming out of the developed world looking for a home. Are you going to make my kids compete with that in the Auckland housing market again?

Simon

Yes, because I think the investment is required. Look I was talking with some KiwiBuild guys and girls last night and what they?re saying to me is that private development money? ah? to do big housing developments has shrunk up as a result of that ban.

Leighton

That it? Thank you, appreciate it. Steve, morning.

Steve

Oh, good morning Leighton, good morning Mr Bridges.

Simon

Gidday.

Steve

Michael stole my thunder a wee bit so um? um? secondary question: ah? Mr Bridges, in terms of um? intergenerational welfare? and um? state housing as a? um? entitlement, what?s your view on that and have you got a plan?

Simon

Oh, it?s a fair go and not a handout. I think what we?ve seen under this government, which I disagree with and we would change, is they?ve effectively gone to a ?no faults, no eviction? policy. Doesn?t really matter what you do in a state house now, you are not going to be evicted. I think this is ludicrous. I think we should be trying to be more aspirational for our people and if we can actually get people out into their own homes? ah then do the work for that.

Steve

Sure. Please get back into power next election.

Simon

Hey, thanks very much.? I?ll try.

Leighton

Do you think he doesn?t want to?

Simon

Laughs. I?m as motivated as you are Michael, I can tell you that.

Leighton

Geoff, good morning.

Geoff

Hiya my friend, how are you?

Leighton

Question?

Geoff

Why don?t we do something proper? You know, we always talk about the problem, you know there?s really good solutions that are never applied?

Simon

I promise you next year you?ll start seeing big solutions from us.? I think the truth is a year into opposition it has been about holding the government to account on the various things about their cost of living and the like, law and order. Next year you will start to see us come out with our own solutions, we?ve talked about RMA reform, but there?ll be a host of other areas besides, I promise you that.

Leighton

All right, Geoff, thanks for the call. Comment from? comment from ah? from? Dougal ?science is not done by consensus, if it was done by consensus, then the papacy was right and ah? ah? right to try to silence Galileo. The phrase ?there is a consensus?, is a leftist paradigm, how can a conservative ever vote for someone using leftist paradigm? That?s you? PS I am a trained environmental scientist and I do not see the IPCC report as real science.?

Simon

Well, I am a conservative. I get a lot of stick for it. Ah? from a lot of media commentators? that?s? that?s who I am? um? we just have to agree to disagree? um? let?s not get wound up about it. ?I believe there is a consensus. We can get run around the track on that again. The important point then is what do you do about it and as I?ve already said I don?t want to lead the world, I think that would create too much harm to too many kiwis. Power prices, petrol prices, you name it, going up.

Leighton

All right. Leaks.

Simon

Yeah.

Leighton

Leaking again?

Simon

Well, I dunno?.

Leighton

Who is it?

Simon

I don?t know.? And all I would sort of say to you is we can see? I think all New Zealanders can. What has happened over the last couple of months? I? I believe we?ve dealt with it. Um? I and my team that I see are entirely focused on talking the stuff that matters to kiwis and not getting too distracted by other bits and pieces like this.

Leighton

But why would somebody from your caucus be leaking?

Simon

I? I don?t know. I don?t know if that is happening, what is happening. Um? I don?t see anything important in this. You can go and try and make a theme there but I don?t see that. So, I?m just trying to keep moving and actually I think you know as you see in that 46% public poll, stick with the stuff that kiwis want us focused on.

Leighton

Maggie Barry?

Simon

Uh? pretty simple, legal employment dispute? um? different sides to the story? um? ultimately though? you gotta say this: um? the parliamentary services found no bullying or harassment, so for me, if you like, as the boss, that?s where it starts and finishes.

Leighton

All right. Jami-Lee Ross – where does he finish?

Simon

Well he?s finished for us. He?s no longer a member of parliament in the National Party caucus. Now in a sense what he does is entirely up to him because we?ve moved on.

Leighton

Plans for Christmas?

Simon

Staycation. It?s going to be great.? Looking forward to a little time with my three children? ah? my middle one says we?ve not got long with him, he’s four but he says he?s getting married so looking forward to reconnecting with them.

Leighton

Oh really? So? you?re staying home. How long you got off?

Simon

Well, I would say two-three weeks, and can I say as I know we are coming to the end of all this?.

Leighton

No, you can?t? you can?t, I?m sorry?

Simon

Ah?.

Recording ends.
