Bruvva goes Biffo: Union boss takes “Boxing Day” too literally

As the saying goes, some tweets just don?t age well. Late in November 2018, John Setka, secretary of the notorious CFMEU, was piously tweeting ?No to violence against women?. Less than a month later, Setka was arrested after a Boxing Day biffo with his missus. Quote:

Militant union boss John Setka has been charged after a Boxing Day row with his lawyer wife Emma Walters.

Police were called to the couple’s home in Melbourne’s west after emergency services were alerted following reports of an argument.

The case is being handled by Victoria Police’s Westgate Family Violence Investigation Unit. End of quote.

Of course, he blames everyone but himself. Quote:

Mr Setka has cited immense family suffering due to ‘ongoing political and ideological attacks on myself as a union leader, with the possibility of losing their husband and father to a prison sentence’ and has asked that his family’s privacy be respected. End of quote.

But it turns out that Setka is no slouch when it comes to using his fists. Gosh, those political and ideological attacks have been taking a toll for years. Usually, apparently, on other peoples? faces. Quote:

The extraordinary police record of John Setka, one of the nation’s most powerful unionists, finally has been laid bare, with 60 charges leading to dozens of convictions and fines including for theft, assault by kicking, criminal damage and assaulting police? He was convicted or fined in relation to 40 of those offences (one of which was dropped after an appeal)?Mr Setka said yesterday the majority of the charges came from heated exchanges on picket lines and in the name of defending union members. End of quote.

They wuz askin? fer it.

It?s enough to drive a woman to drink. Quote:

The wife of troubled Victorian CFMEU boss John Setka has ?allegedly been caught driving at more than five times the legal ?alcohol limit when she was pulled over for speeding hours after a Boxing Day altercation with her husband?Lawyer Emma Walters allegedly blew a blood alcohol reading of .282 when highway patrol officers stopped the car she was ?driving, with two children aged five and seven as passengers, along the Western Highway, more than 300km from Melbourne.

?Horsham highway patrol officers intercepted a 43-year-old Footscray woman for allegedly speeding on Boxing Day along the Western Highway in Pimpinio about 8pm,? a Victoria Police statement said? The incident occurred several hours after an argument between Ms Walters and Mr Setka resulted in police being called to their Footscray home in Melbourne?s inner west and charging the Construction Forestry Maritime Mining and Energy Union secretary. End of quote.

Being the true hypocrites that they are, after campaigning for months on ?gendered violence?, the Labor left have gone to ground now that one of their biggest names is in trouble. Quote:

Attempts to contact the CFMEU for comment yesterday were unsuccessful?A spokesman declined to comment.

The ACTU also declined to comment and Victorian Trades Hall did not return calls.

A spokeswoman for the Opposition Leader said Mr Shorten would not comment on a matter before the courts.

Speaking at the KPMG Couta boat races at Sorrento, Ms O?Dwyer said Mr Shorten, who relied upon the union and its leadership for votes and donations, should distance himself from Mr Setka. ?John Setka can no longer be tolerated as the head of the CFMEU; nor can he be tolerated as the No 1 supporter of Bill Shorten. It?s time he resigned.? End of quote.
