Smollett hate crime injustice

The twisting and turning in the Jessie Smollett saga was as good as any television drama until the disappointing final act where the American justice system failed miserably. Quote.

Cook County First Assistant State?s Attorney Joseph Magats told reporters that prosecutors dropped the case because Smollett forfeited a $10,000 bond payment and did community service. Magats also said that prosecutors needed to focus their time on violent crimes in Chicago.

Authorities have said Smollett created the hoax because he was unhappy with his pay on the Fox show and wanted to promote his career.? End of quote.

Of course he did. Smollett?s career is founded on publicity; good or bad, it really doesn?t matter, the point is that everyone knows your name.

He stars in the television drama series Empire which is airing its 5th series but the show?s producers, Fox Broadcasting, haven?t released their decision on a 6th one. Quote.

The cast of Empire season six will largely depend on whether or not any characters say their goodbyes in the Empire season five finale.

Jussie Smollett (as Jamal Lyon) …. could also appear in season six having starred in every episode of Empire to date.? End of quote.

The first time we heard Smollett?s name was as the target of racial hatred. We were told that at work, he received a letter saying ?…you will die black F…? with the letters MAGA on the back. The envelope contained a white powdery substance that turned out to be crushed ibuprofen. It was a fake threat.

A week later on January 29th he claimed that he was attacked by two men outside his home. Quote.

Smollett then made a police report where he claimed he was the victim of an attack in which the offenders struck him while yelling racial and homophobic slurs. Smollett also reported that the offenders placed a rope around his neck, poured a liquid chemical on him and told him ?this is MAGA country?.? End of quote.

A nationwide uproar ensued. A darling of their screens subjected to a violent hate crime! It?s impossible to measure the extent of the resulting racial discord. But it?s there.

Trump supporters were blamed as the culprits. Picture two white men wearing MAGA caps stalking and attacking a skinny black gay guy as he returned home in the wee small hours. This race-based crime got major publicity. You couldn?t buy this kind of front page news. Or could you?

Apparently he could. Jussie allegedly paid the Osundairo brothers $3,500 to stage the ?fake? attack. Whaleoil transcribed the statement read out by Risa Lanier, Chief of the Criminal Prosecutions Bureau for the Cook County State Attorney?s Office. It was a very detailed and convincing account of a hoax.

Trump supporters breathed a sigh of relief and imagined Smollett?s future behind bars wearing an orange jumpsuit.

County Cook, however, dismissed the charges as a win-win. They got to free up resources to deal with actual violent crime and Smollett got away with paying a small fine.

This is not justice! Where?s the justice for American Trump supporters falsely slurred? Where?s the justice in Smollett still strutting around claiming his innocence? Where?s the justice for future victims of racial hatred that Smollett deliberately stirred up for financial gain? If the original attack were real, would the accused men have been fined only $10,000 and sent off to do community work?

quote.

The FBI says hate crimes reports were up about 17% in 2017, marking a rise for the third year in a row, even though violent crime in America fell slightly overall. Crimes of antisemitism led the spike.? end of quote

The Guardian

Cook County just walked away from an opportunity to make a huge point of discouraging hate crime. Why did they do that? Quote.

Chicago police released nearly 60-pages documenting their work on the Jussie Smollett case Wednesday. It details detectives? work and the exhausting way in which they investigated every detail of Smollett?s story. ? End of quote.

We cannot show you the file as it has been sealed. Quote.

Just a day after all the charges against ?Empire? actor Jussie Smollett were dropped, his legal team wants the case sealed. They plan to file a motion for expungement Wednesday.? End of quote.

CBS Chicago

Fingers crossed that Fox Studios will mete out token justice by extinguishing Smollett?s career.
