Who says the mosque gunman deserves a fair trial?

Oh dear, oh dear, oh dear. We really have started down a very slippery slope. Modern-day book burnings and death by association (Jordan Peterson) have already started. Our laws can suddenly be changed without proper consultation. Witch hunts are occurring where people who have made statements in the past that someone has decided are racist have lost their livelihoods without the chance to defend themselves.

Non Muslim women are wearing headscarves and now, a high profile journalist has come out and said something that is completely unforgivable. Kate Hawkesby has said that she does not think that the Christchurch gunman should get a fair trial.

What are we coming to, New Zealand? quote.

Mr Hosking said yesterday that it was “madness” to think we could just upend the justice system and remove the right to a fair trial following Friday’s horrific events. That the accused is entitled to a trial just like everyone else, because that is how the law works.

I disagree of course, I find it immensely frustrating that families will be put through more grief, agony and heartache – with potentially a long, drawn-out court trial.

They’ve already been put through so much, not only with the events of last Friday, but with having to wait so long for the bodies of their loved ones to be returned so that evidence can be gathered. end quote.

Kate… are you seriously saying that the families of the dead do not want to see the perpetrator of the crime brought to justice? How do you think they would feel if we did NOT follow due process at a time like this? quote.

Why does anyone who rejects fairness so completely, still get to be part of a ‘fair’ system?

end quote.

Because that is what we are and that is the system we live under. Everyone has the right to a fair trial. Charles Manson, the Moors murderers, Ted Bundy… all were given a fair trial because that is the system of justice that we uphold. It is almost unthinkable to hear a high profile journalist suggest otherwise. quote.

It’s upsetting we can’t be trail blazers here and rewrite the way justice is served in this instance.
After all, we are facing a new normal. This is unprecedented for us as a country.

A newspaper. end quote.

It is not a ‘new normal’. Maybe our security services, denigrated under the present government, will have additional powers to ensure that perpetrators like this can be picked up before they create mayhem? Maybe there will be a revenge attack? Who knows? Kate Hawkesby speaks as if the terrorist has won. She has basically rolled over and given in to anarchy.

What we must never do, though, is override our justice system because someone did something that we find abhorrent. This is a lynch mob mentality. We must never allow our society to sink so low.

After all, Golriz will be the first to tell you that everyone deserves a fair trial, and a defense… even Simon Bikindi.

We must not lose everything that is important to us in our society. This is what makes us stand out from so many other countries, and it is one of the reasons so many people want to live here.

That a high profile journalist should say something like this is a disgrace. But then, a lot of things have happened lately that we never thought we would see here.

And this is what is happening. Right here, right now.

Who says the mosque gunman deserves a fair trial? I do. We all do. At least, we should.
