4th June
1942,  The Battle of Midway begins. The attack ended as a disaster for the
Japanese losing 322 aircraft, 3500 men, and 3 of their 4 aircraft carriers.
1989,  Chinese troops storm through Tiananmen Square. After nearly 3 weeks of protests by mainly students, the government sent in the troops killing at least 300, wounding many more and arresting as many as 10,000.
1717,  The Freemasons are founded in London.
1940,  The British complete the evacuation of 300,00 troops from Dunkirk.
1943,  The Cromwell-Dunedin express derails near Hyde in Central Otago, 21 are killed and 47 injured.
