Self-censorship

Liveleak – the outfit that will happily post Islamist propaganda, footage of American soldiers being killed and a whole host of vile film – has bowed to pressure and withdrawn Fitna, the film I linked to yesterday.

Following threats to our staff of a very serious nature, and some ill informed reports from certain corners of the British media that could directly lead to the harm of some of our staff, Liveleak.com has been left with no other choice but to remove Fitna from our servers.

This is a sad day for freedom of speech on the net but we have to place the safety and well being of our staff above all else. We would like to thank the thousands of people, from all backgrounds and religions, who gave us their support. They realised LiveLeak.com is a vehicle for many opinions and not just for the support of one.

Perhaps there is still hope that this situation may produce a discussion that could benefit and educate all of us as to how we can accept one anothers culture.

We stood for what we believe in, the ability to be heard, but in the end the price was too high.

I think it was a mistake to surrender on this one. I don’t endorse Wilders’ film but I think it is perfectly legitimate and the response has been completely disproportionate.

Here’s an alternative link to Fitna:

Just as a side note, how freaking cool is Geert Wilders’ hair? I want it.

Fitna

Above is a copy of the controversial short film Fitna produced by Geert Wilders.90% of the film consists of quotations from the Quran mixed with footage of terrorist attacks and statements from Imams and other religious leaders – stuff you can’t really argue with.

I disagree with the bulk of Wilders’ conclusions – they seem a black and white – but I have been shocked at the response to this. Network Solutions – the group who host hizbollah.org – pulled the website of the film due to it’s contents. I would defy anyone to find something in that video that is more offensive than what you would find on Hizbollah.org.

I don’t endorse the film but I would defend Wilders’ right to have it shown.

Looks like there will be a riot

Politician attacks Muhammad – 17 Jan 2008 – NZ Herald: World / International News
Simple story here.
Austrian Politician says Austria is no home for radical Muslims. So far so good, not much problem there. But wait…..
The Muslims get offended at being called radical, and then threaten violence. Uhmmmisn' that kind of "radical"
One question though.
Why do they never threaten to go home?
